Must read article - Eating Disorder Treatment

On the surface, eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and BED, seem quite different from the diagnosis of trauma. While that is true, when any woman or adolescent admits to our treatment center, she is suffering from deep emotional pain. For the eating disordered, the genesis of this pain might include parental rejection, severe childhood bullying, unresolved shame or guilt—the list can go on and on. Similarly, the origin of trauma can be alcoholism in the family, violent injury, or sexual violation. The “whys” are highly diverse, yet the result is the same: the utilization of maladaptive coping skills (purging, restricting, and isolation, avoidance) to deal with emotional dysregulation.
